My natural hair journey
Two years ago today, I started my natural hair journey out of choice. My hair was natural “by force” from the age of 0 till 16 as my mother forbade my elder sister and I to relax our hair till we finished secondary school. After my final exams, I was so excited to relax my hair and that was one of the first things I did. But you see my hair is very soft and anytime I relaxed it my scalp would burn. I felt this shouldn’t be, but what else could I do to my hair. I started considering going natural but was scared to do it as I wasn't sure how I would manage my hair.
I gradually came to a point where I used to relax my hair twice/thrice a year. After a while I began to get tired of putting chemicals on my hair. I felt God gave me this natural hair, why am I trying to make it look different killing my scalp and hair in the process? I decided to check online, read articles, watched videos and bought a book on natural hair. I didn’t want to do the big chop and regret it.
I transitioned for a while and on that fateful day, Nov 1 2008 I took a bold step and did the big chop. I didn’t set out to do it but it happened (long story). Baale was not a happy bunny. I had been hinted to him I was going natural but I don’t think he took me serious. When he saw my chopped up hair in comb twists later that day he was in utter shock and didn’t speak to me for sometime. We have come a long way from where we were two years ago maybe because I have come to a silent compromise with him- I braid my hair and fix weaves some times. Those are the times I don’t hear any complains. I think he has come to terms with my natural hair (more like given up on me) but still hopes some day I go back to relaxing my hair.
Like Baale, some friends and family find it perplexing that I have gone natural. Some quietly wondered while some have asked me out rightly what on earth I am doing. Some people see it has your hair is unkempt. Well, I try to explain myself in one sentence because anything more than that might result into an argument. My hair is not a function of who I am, it is a part of me but I am not my hair. What I decide to do with my hair is my personal choice. The same way you have decided to relax your hair is the same way I have decided not to. I don’t judge you because you have relaxed hair. God loves us all and I doubt it is our hair that will determine where we end up when we die.
Some have even gone as far as saying, “if you like don’t relax your hair but if Princess wants to relax her hair don’t stop her”. LOL. My reply usually is to laugh and say I will tell Princess the same thing my mother said to my elder sister and I- “nothing touches your hair till you leave secondary school, after that if you want to put jerry curls on one side and tint the other side that one na your own palaver.” Hope that answers the question.
My natural hair journey in summary has been full of high and low moments. Frustrating days esp. when I can’t think of what to do with my hair. Right now I am considering chopping it all up and letting my hair grow again. Hmmm. Whatever the case I don't see myself relaxing my hair again.
I think it is safe to say that going natural isn’t for the faint hearted. It is probably against everything you know right now and what the BLACK/Africa media, culture, or society agree with e.g some African companies won't employ you because of it, some hairdressers will put their nose up and refuse to braid your hair, some will try to charge you more (happened to me). You need to make the choice for yourself and do your research. I am glad I have inspired one or two people in helping them make that final decision to go natural.
So today, I wish myself happy two years of going natural and will like to give a shout out to all the natural hair bloggers (as at the last time I checked) I know. It is a narrow road we are on (if I may say so myself) and only a few travel it so we should be celebrated.
Standtall, tygernity, favoured girl, tolatino, jaycee, archiwiz, FFF, Scarlet, doll.
If u are a natural girl like me, hola! For my relaxed hair friends as well, I love you too. Muah! ;)

Time surely flies- Thankful Tuesday
It seem like yesterday when I was in the labour room thinking my life would end and then my adorable princess was born. Last weekend she turned 1. She is such a smart little diva who walks all over the place, can say the words "bye-bye", "gba" (which means take in English) and "take", follows simple instruction and knows when she does something wrong.

To speak or not to speak
My two and half year old niece amazes me. She speaks English and Yoruba quite well. This is because sometimes she spends time at my parents (her grandparents) house in Ibadan and my grandma (her great grandma) who hardly speak any English stay at my parents’ as well. So you can imagine the English and Yoruba conversations that go on at my parents’. One time my grandma called her and I heard her say “Mama, mo n bo o”. Another time someone else called her and she replied “ I am coming”. That cracked me up! The girl even says some Yoruba words that I don’t know. At that age she can interpret English to Yoruba and vice versa and she knows who to speak English and Yoruba to respectively. If I say I am not amazed, I lie.
So, I was sharing my amazement with a friend and she was like “ah they have turned your niece into iya arugbo (old woman) ” referring to her speaking Yoruba. I laughed at the time but thinking about it later, I wondered, when did speaking Yoruba become razz or an old person’s thing to do. If children don’t speak it when they are young is it when they are older they will speak it?
I think many Yoruba people are guilty of this notion. The worse ones are some that live in Nigeria and refuse to speak any Yoruba to their children “Please o, I don’t want my children to be razz” (so that means you that can speak Yoruba you are razz abi?), “We only speak Queen English in our house” (Fake fake). What a sad and ignorant thing to think.
I observe Asian parents with their children on the bus or train here in the UK and all you hear them speak is their native language. And I can bet you that those children can speak English fluently. Why do we have this mentality that if our children speak Yoruba they won’t be able to speak English? You! yes you, don’t you speak both English and Yoruba and maybe another language like French effortlessly? Or what exactly is the issue as I really what to understand it. If someone can explain it to me I will appreciate that.
I have one kind of respect for people who can speak Yoruba well and English even better. It trips me. I am definitely not the best Yoruba speaking person (I can hardly pray well in Yoruba or read a book in Yoruba) but I can converse relatively well in Yoruba. My wish is for Princess to understand and speak Yoruba well enough amongst other languages. I want her to be able to hold her own wherever she is. Because of this I speak Yoruba to her as much as I can (she will be 9 months soon). Yes I am razz like that, bite me! lol
An uncle of mine who works with the American embassy told me Yoruba language is hot cake in the States and there are Americans looking for people to teach them Yoruba. What am I even saying, my sister, once had a job in her school to teach one of her American lecturers Yoruba and she was getting paid per hour ( i think), no be say dem tell me. I tell you, this language we have so belittled has serious potential. And you are there feeling cool speaking Queen English. Proud that your children don't speak Yoruba. Yeye!
Yoruba is such a rich language and if we are not careful it will go into extinction with all this nonsense posh behaviour we acquired from only God knows where. Today, Latin is considered a dead language. Even though it is still taught in schools, there are no native, fluent speakers of Latin. What a shame!
We all need to do our part if we don’t want same happening to the Yoruba Language. I beg una, keep speaking the language. Hopefully our mentality will change gradually.
I have said my own o! If I have offended any one by this note, e ni binu ni o (don't be annoyed) because na true talk I talk and you know it. :)

Ok I think what I should do is resume my thankful post abi? That should give me something to blog about. Hopefully...
My little princess is 5 months today! Yippee! she is growing up into such a smart cutie if I may say so myself. In fact, I give all glory to God for her life!

Gone too long...(Another Milestone!)
I have been gone too long I don't even know where to start from. Ok let me start by sharing my wonderful news which a few bloggers know about already. It is weird because I keep saying my blog is not a personal blog per se but an inspirational one. However I feel I owe it to you guys (my blogville family) to share my good news and the Lord's doing in my life, like when I got married.
Ok enough of the suspense. About a month ago, I gave birth to my adorable princess. She is such a delight and keeps amazing me everyday. My pregnancy experience was amazing apart from the first 3 months of morning sickness. The labour experience was out of this world. I am sure other blogger mamas can testify that it is like going through the valley of death but totally worth it when you see your bundle of joy. I thank God for safe uncomplicated delivery. Baba God is ever faithful. He is too much!
I pray for bloggers known and unknown who:
- are currently pregnant that God will give them supernatural childbirth. Mother and Child(ren) and even daddy will come out of the experience alive and well.
- are waiting on God for the fruit of the womb. Children are the heritage of the Lord and it is HIS will for us to multiply and dominate the earth. Blessed is the fruit of your bodies in Jesus name!
So you might ask how does it feel to be a mummy? LOL, well I am just enjoying the ride as each day comes with different experiences. I am taking each day at a time. Baale is excited to be a daddy and I can tell Princess will be a daddy's girl.
N.B- Hopefully I will continue with my celebrity series very very soon.

Count Down to 100th Post (Intro)
So, I have finally decided how I want to mark my 100th post. Sorry no answer and question session. Maybe I will do that for my 150th or 200th post. Haha.
I have come to realise that in this life, many of us seem to celebrate families, friends, mentors etc when they pass on to the other side. Sometimes we acknowledge them in our heads but never really voice out our appreciation till it is too late. Take for example Michael Jackson. He was ridiculed when he was alive, but now that he is gone a number of people are celebrating him. Why wasn’t this done when he was alive?
Well, I have decided that for my next 4 posts (97th-100th), I will make it about others by celebrating some key people that I cherish and that have influenced my life over the course of the years.
Please take time to celebrate the people you cherish today. I cannot overemphasise this.
Stay tuned and God bless you blogville.
N.B- On a totally random note, Koko Mansion has come to an end. Sob sob! I enjoyed watching the show and I think Bolanle deserved to win, though I was rooting for Rita (hehehe, don't shoot me abeg! I just dey gbadun the chick as razz as she is). To know what I think of the show, especially for those that did not watch but are quick to judge, please read Nolimit's views on it. She has spoken my mind. No need to repeat long story. Kudos to the producers and D'banj. See you next season, God willing. Ahhhhhhhhhh Oooooooooooooseee!

Aloted goes to Maryland!
So a few weeks ago, I went to Maryland, not the one in Lagos o…na the one in the US of A… lol. I thank God for journey mercies. I was there for 10 days and I had a wonderful time. I stayed with Baale's sister and her family. They were such wonderful hosts. Midnight crew visited their church and I got to see the singers live and direct!
So I met up with Nefertiti, it was as if we had known each other for years (though we usually chat online). We clicked like bread and butter (can’t think of anything better...lol). She took me round town and I had loads of fun with her. I got to meet her husband and beautiful daughter and they are both just wonderful. Thankfully, her alter ego did not show face (maybe once though..lol). Neffie, thank u for such a blast. By God's grace, I shall retaliate when you come to the U.K
Guess who else I hooked up with- Vera and Bumight!!! Yes ooo..lol. I must confess I was a bit reluctant to call Vera initially cuz we all know how popular our Vera is and I didn’t want to be on a queue waiting to talk to her. Anyway I "gathered" liver and called her up. She was so delightful on the phone. But u can guess now, like I thought, I had to hold on for a few minutes because another blogger was also calling her at the same time! LOL…I thought that was hilarious…
Anyhoo, so Vera suggested we meet up with Neffie and Bumight. It was a good thing Bumight had finished her exams then so she could come. We went to see a movie- Terminator Salvation. The gals made fun of me afterwards, because I kept on saying I wanted to see an action movie but in the cinema I was cringing during every “action” scene. Kai, that movie had too much action! After the movie which ended around 12 midnight, we hung out and gisted like old friends till about 2.30a.m! If not that I had to go home, you know as per JJC in town, who knows we might have hung out till 5a.m. Fun times!
I met up with another friend, we went to uni together and it was great seeing her. I got to call family members and a lot of other friends in the states as well. I also spoke with Good Nigerian Girl. I was the first to call her on her birthday. Yippee! LOL. I was also meant to hook up with Abbie, remember her, winner of the last blogsville idol (she hasn't blogged in ages sef) but unfortunately that did not happen. Hopefully, next time.
Overall my trip was fun however I left with a nasty cold & cough. I had to call in sick in the office when I got back. What a way to end a wonderful holiday. On the whole, I thank God I had a nice time.
I surely missed u guys and I am glad to be back. I have had blogger's block for a while now so thought I might as well gist you about my trip and hope that my blogger mojo comes back soonest!
Oh before I forget this is my 95th post (i think) so that means my 100th post is just around the corner...yippee!!! I was going to do the standard you guys get to ask me any question, but when I saw how you people bombarded Writefreak & NoLimit with powerful questions, fear catch me..lol. So I have proactively chickened out and will think of something different. Hopefully will come up with a plan by my next post ;)
God bless!

Are you for real???
Blogging this evening was the last thing on my mind but if I don't share this, I might just burst! I hardly rant on my blog, as it doesn't fit into the purpose of this blog but I think this one is necessary.
I left work early today as I was not feeling so well. Been in a foul mood because of hay fever and my boss stressing me at work etc. I thought browsing through blogville will cheer me up but alas! I had barely left standtall's blog talking of her illiterate "friend" and I was still reeling from what the guy had to say about women, only to be confronted with more drama at home!
So Baale comes home with one of his friends. This is someone I get along with very well and kinda respect. I always make sure he eats when he comes over. Anyway this evening, I asked Baale to sort him out as I was still feeling poorly. Everything was going fine (actually I wasn't even listening to their conversation, as I was still browsing through blogville) till mr friend lets call him T for talkative..he talks a lot kai said he wanted to watch the Apprentice as it was the semi-final show or something like that. I am not sure what they were talking about but next thing I hear T say "I have never come across an intelligent woman before". I was like "excuse me, what did you just say?" He repeated himself, that women are not intelligent. At first I thought he was joking. I was like T "how can you make such a statement". He was still forming, I was like "Baale, pls I want this guy out of my house, how dare he insult women". I was really upset o. I asked him if he even knew the meaning of what intelligent what and guess all he could come up with "challenging". Clap for yourself intelligent man. I went as far as saying only illiterates talk like that and that I was so sorry for whoever married him. I know that was harsh but I had to say something! To be honest at that point, any respect I had for him, as per Baale's friend, diminished. I really wish I could send him out of my house but for Baale. Baale told him not to talk like that but he was still mis-yarning.
I now asked him how many men and women were left on the Apprentice (I don't follow it that much) and he was like that's TV blah blah, but check this there were four women and 1 man left. I really wanted to fight o but Baale told me to take it easy so I kept quiet but was seriously fuming inside. To be honest T knows how to wind somebody and I didn't want to fall for it at the same time I wanted him to take that statement back about women.
Anyway I kept quiet and heard him say something about even the top women he had worked with in banks were not smart. That in meetings they keep quiet and all they can do is market. In my mind I was like wow...that is such a dumb thing to say. This is someone who is out of job o (let me not even go into that story). I also heard him say he isn't saying women are not good with other things and that he wasn't generalising. I was just shaking my head that this guy is very very dumb...what part of "all the women I have met are not intelligent" is not generalising. I decided to ignore him.
Guess what at the end of the Apprentice show, Sir Alan fired the guy...even though i don't follow it I was so happy...and was like "you see now and women are not intelligent". Mr T was still yarning dust. At this point I wanted to ask Baale, pls when is your friend leaving but decided to chill. Thankfully, a few minutes later Mr T decides to go home and said good night. I didn't answer. He repeated his goodnight again and I was like "sebi i am not intelligent enough to have a conversation with you so please just dey go". He was like " pls o don't take it personal" and I said "I am a woman so I will take it personal".
I was so glad when he left, I felt like disinfecting my living room. Se if I had known he was coming to say all that nonsense in my house, I won't have offered him food in the first place. LOL. He eats my food, and then has the energy to insult women in my house. Mscheeewww.
When Baale came back from seeing him off, he apologised and said he can't believe T made that statement. That he must have real issues. I totally agree, he either has major issues or he is just a male chauvinist. I am not sure if I can relate to him on the same level any more. Any one that thinks less of women cannot be in my good books.
Men like this get on my nerves. For a long time I felt many men were narrow minded but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt but apparently they are still plenty out there and one of them is Baale's friend. Sad very sad.

Thankful post- the "A" edition
Here's a link to my last TT.
I am thankful for God's Amazing Grace in my life. Ever since when I can remember, I have always seen the evidence of God's grace in my life, marriage, family, work etc. Even when I don't deserve it, he showers me with his unmerited favor.
I am thankful for Abundant life. This year I have heard of a number of young people dying and I am no better than any of them. I am grateful for God's Assurance of life for me and my family. Not just any type of life but a life filled with goodness, love and plenty more.
I can not be grateful enough for Accident-free journeys. Since I started driving last year, I have not had a single accident even though I have been very close to having a few. I must confess anything accident scares me so I am very thankful for my safety.
I am thankful I have a good Appetite. A few weeks ago my eating habits was sporadic but am glad it is getting back to normal. Reminds me of the song we used to sing in primary school: "some have food but cannot eat, some can eat but have no food, I have food and I can eat, glory be to God on high"
I am grateful for Acquaintances & Friends I have made on blogville. You guys are just too much. God bless you all.
So what are you thankful for?
Please check out Icequeen's "I" thankful list from last week. I found it really refreshing! :)

Thankful Tuesday (13)
Here's a link to my last TT
Recently I haven't felt like the good daughter I should be, sometimes I do not acknowledge God but He is forever faithful and good to me. Father I thank you and I am sorry.
After church on sunday, heading home, I tripped and fell down the stairs. I landed on my left arm and side and it hurt! I was half in pain and half embarassed; I just wanted to get out of there fast. I thank God that it wasn't more than that. My side and arm still feel sore but I am alive! And to think my spirit told me to take the elevator and I didn't listen.
My sis-in-law and her family came visiting from the states. This was my first time meeting her in person (we talk on the phone). She is such a lovely person, we got along well and we had loads of fun. I thank God for Baale's family. They are really wonderful people. Bless them.
Update on my dad (sorry it's late but better than nothing)- the cast has been removed. He has graduated from using crunches to using a walking stick. He is now back at work. Praise God! Once again, thanks for all your support.
I am grateful for Baale, he is doing so well at work. God's favor is certainly on his life and I know God is taking him to higher places. I am thankful that Baale cares for me, and checks up on me "Are you ok?" he always ask. Love u loads.
Thankful for wonderful friends around me and you guys on blogville. You rock my world. x
What are you thankful for???
********************************************
I was thinking, for those who do the weekly thankful post, we could do something different for next week or the next time you do your thankful posts. Can we list 5 or more things, starting with the first alphabet of our blog name that we are thankful for? So for instance, the following people should do a thankful series with the highlighted letter:
Adaeze, Aloted, Enkay, Good Nigerian Girl, Lolia, Icequeen, Nolimit, Mojisola, Rethots (do you still blog???), Seye & Writefreak.
I hope you get my flow and I believe this will be fun. Anyone else is welcomed to join. I have just listed the people I know who do the thankful series (I hope I have not left anyone out, if so, apologies!)
Catch you next time with my "A" thankful post ;-)

Deo Volente*
I have been meaning to blog about this but reading Temite’s post on death, re-inspired me so I have decided to stop procrastinating.
James 4:13-16 says-
Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil.
As human beings we plan, we strategise, we deliberate over our future. However we should remember that our lives is in the hands of God. A number of people sleep at night and do not wake up in the morning. What becomes of all their plans? No one can boast of tomorrow as only God knows tomorrow.
Remember the story of the rich fool who thought he had arrived but God told him he will die that night and he would not be able to enjoy all he had worked for. The problem was not that the man was rich but he thought he was invincible and could enjoy his riches anytime and all by himself but alas death came knocking.
This is just a short post to encourage us that as we wake up each day, let us be thankful for another opportunity to be in the land of the living as it is by the grace of God. Let us be a source of blessing to others and ensure God is directing our every step.
Have a great weekend and a Happy new month!
P.S-I have no internet at home as Baale and I just moved, so I shall be back on blogsville next week, by God's grace :)

Thankful Tuesday (12)
- God has been good to me. He is merciful, loving and kind. I went through a rough patch for some time now but despite it all and how I felt; HIS love for me overshadowed it all.
- Baale has been my rock especially during the rough patch... I am thankful for his support and his patience. Sometimes I wonder why anyone will want to live with me especially during my low times but I am very thankful for my man
- I am glad that the rough time is becoming a thing of the past. I will not allow the devil to steal my joy; the joy of the Lord is my strength
- My dad is back home now. Praise God. His leg is still in a cast but I hear it will soon be removed
- I was informed that the armed robbers have been caught. Apparently they were a gang of sixteen or so.
- You guys in blogville are just too much. Thanks for your messages, emails, phone calls to ask after my dad. The love I feel in here is just overwhelming. God bless you guys
- My grandma is also back home and is improving everyday. Stroke- in your face!!!!!
- Despite the recession, credit crunch and all the tales of woes, God has been providing for my needs. As his child, I cannot suffer. It is not my portion
- Baale and I moved house.
So what are you thankful for?
I have changed my thankful series from "Ten Things Tuesday" to "Thankful Tuesday". That way I am not limited to ten things I am thankful for. Also I apologise that I have not been responding to comments. I cannot promise that I will respond to comments going forward or at least in the nearest future but do know that I appreciate them. Please keep them coming. However, if someone asks me a question I will endeavor to reply on my blog or via email. Thank you guys for your understanding :-)
