On Santa and Christmas

Thank you to everyone who voted for my blog and the soulsistas blog in the Nigerian blog awards. We won we won we won…. Yay!!!! God bless you all! My excitement knows no bounds :)

So I have a dilemma…or I am a bit confused about an issue. Maybe you can help me.

A little background, growing up my mum used to take us to see Santa who is commonly known as Father Christmas in Nigeria. We went a few Christmas till my mum got a “rev” that Santa wasn't biblical. So no more Father Christmas for us. By that time I was already bored with the ruler, eraser, biro and exercise book we got every year from Father Christmas anyway so I didn't think much of it.

We also put up a Christmas tree and Christmas decorations every year. It was always fun hanging Christmas decorations and lights as a family. In between it all, including the rice and chicken we ate on Christmas day my mum instilled in us the true meaning of Christmas.

Now fast forward to present day, Bionic’s godfather took her to go see Santa when she was 1 year old. I didn't think anything about it. She had fun and took a picture with Santa. Last year for some reason I felt uneasy in my spirit about the whole Santa thing, who knows maybe I was getting a rev like my mum. Anyway she didn't get to see Santa.

Now this year, the talk of going to see Santa is back and so is the uneasiness. I really can’t place it.

I make it a conscious effort not to get religious about things but at the same time I can see how easy it is for Santa to replace Jesus Christ in the Christmas story.

Bionic is three now and more aware of Christmas especially in terms of decorations and lights and what have you. I want Bionic to know that:
  • Whether she is well behaved or naughty Jesus still loves her
  • Christmas is about Jesus coming to the world to save us from sin
  • Christmas like any other time is the time to show love to others
  • Christmas is not about collecting presents but sharing
  • Christmas is so not about SANTA but JESUS

Sugarspring wrote in her last post- "The fact that people replace Santa with Jesus on Christmas day and forget the real representation of what that day symbolizes doesn’t mean it is OKAY". I totally agree with her. Her post partially inspired my question.

It's bad enough that Christmas has been commercialized.

Ok so what do you think…? What are your thoughts on Santa? Parents, are your children going to see santa? What Christmas values are you instilling in your children?

Uncles and Aunties would love to hear from you too. I would love to learn from y'all.

One more thing what do you think about writing or saying Merry X-mas instead of Merry Christ-mas. Where did X come from sef?

Thanks

Aloted

Matthew 1:21

New International Version (NIV)
21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Christ is the reason for the season. He came to die that I may have eternal life. I am forever grateful.

May the true meaning of Christmas be made known to each and everyone of us.

God bless! & Merry Christmas!!!!!

PS- I am braving myself to make that Christmas Chicken Roast. :)

Not feeling Christmassy....

9 days till Christmas! Yet, I am not feeling “Christmassy” AT ALL- whatever that means. My colleagues at work keep asking "so have you done your Christmas Shopping?" Chris-tmas what?? Ya! Another means for them shops to get my hard earn currency right?

I was going to get a Christmas tree and some decorations but thought Princess will not let this Christmas tree rest, so that idea went down the drain. I'mma still get some decorations.

I was going to get a Christmas Chicken/Turkey to roast for the family on Christmas day, but I have never roasted a whole bird before in my life. What if it comes out a mess. Ok calm down-I could look up recipes- google is my friend and it can’t be that bad! A Question for cook experts!! – So Christmas day is on Sunday; do I leave the bird in the oven while we go to church? Or start roasting when I get back?? This is all assuming I buy the bird in the first place!!! Phew

I was going to do some Charity stuff this Christmas, all in the spirit of giving, but still haven't gotten round to that. Shame on me! Ok I still have 9 more days. Make a plan girl.

We were going to meet up with friends at their place on Boxing Day but due to circumstances beyond their control, that is not happening any more. Gutted! I was so looking forward to that.

Oh well!

Even though I am not feeling Christmassy…I am thankful for the gift of Christ, who in fact is the reason for the season. I am forever thankful HE was born to save me.

Christmassy feeling or not- I will make sure to have a wonderful Christmas day with Baale and Princess :)

So anyone out there like me not feeling Christmassy?

What are y'all doing this Christmas?

Do you believe?

Hi good people,

Sorry I have been away. I got the dreadful flu and I am just recovering. Anyway just stopped by to wish y'all a happy Christmas and a prosperous 2009.

In the midst of all the eating, merrymaking and jubilation, let us remember that Jesus Christ is the reason for the season.

He brought JOY to the WORLD. May your JOY
no know bound because of him.

He came to set us free from the law of sin and death.

He came that we might have eternal life.

He came because he loves you and I.

Do you believe in HIM?

He is coming back AGAIN, not as a baby but as the King of Kings.

Are you ready?

I pray that the true meaning of Christmas will be revealed to each and everyone of us as we celebrate.

If I don't update again before the year runs out, see you in 2009 by God's grace.

God bless!!!

Feliz Navidad/Merry Christmas!!!

Hi peeps!

This is to wish you a Merry Christmas. As we party and share gifts let us remember to be thankfully to God for sending his Son Jesus to save mankind. Christ indeed is the reason for the season. Not sure when next I'll be blogging but till then enjoy your Christmas and Happy New year in advance.

I leave you with this Christmas poem by Nicholas Gordon

May you find this Christmas inner peace
Equal to the patient love you give,
Releasing all the pain you can release,
Renewing all the grace with which you live.
Yearnings may you turn to rhapsodies,
Choosing to find happiness in beauty,
Holding in their haunting melodies
Riches that sustain your sense of duty.
In anger may you find an evening star
Showing you the way to Bethlehem.
The angels that watch naked from afar
May you hear songs of who would none condemn.
As all you love are blessed in having you
So may you feel the joy in all you do.
