Where has your handbag been lately?

Hi peeps, A good friend of mine sent me the below article on handbags. I must say I was quite shocked ! It never really occurred to me about how much germs can exist on our handbags based on where we drop them. Gross!

Please read and let me know what you think? Cheers!

*Guys/men please feel free to comment as well* Rethots no vex o ;)

***********************************************************************************************

Have you ever noticed girls who set their handbags on
public toilet floors, then go directly to their dining
tables and set it on the table? Happens a lot!
It's not always the 'restaurant food' that causes
Stomach distress. Sometimes 'what you don't know will hurt you'!

Mom got so upset when guests came in the door and
plopped their handbags down on the counter where she
was cooking or setting up food. She always said that
handbags are really dirty, because of where they have
been.

It's something just about every woman carries with them.
While we may know what's inside our handbags,
do you have any idea what's on the outside? Women carry
handbags everywhere; from the office to public toilets
to the floor of the car. Most women won't be caught
without their handbags, but did you ever stop to think
about where your handbag goes during the day.
I drive a school bus, so my handbag has been on the
floor of the bus a lot,' says one woman. 'On the
floor of my car, and in toilets.'

'I put my handbag in grocery shopping carts and on the
floor of the toilet,' says another woman 'and of
course in my home which should be clean.'
We decided to find out if handbags harbor a lot of
bacteria. We learned how to test them at Nelson
Laboratories in Salt Lake , and then we set out to
test the average woman's handbag.

Most women told us they didn't stop to think about
what was on the bottom of their handbag. Most said at
home they usually set their handbags on top of kitchen
tables and counters where food is prepared.
Most of the ladies we talked to told us they wouldn't
be surprised if their handbags were at least a little bit dirty.

It turns out handbags are so surprisingly dirty, even
the microbiologist who tested them was shocked.
Microbiologist Amy Karen of Nelson Labs says nearly
all of the handbags tested were not only high in
bacteria, but high in harmful kinds of bacteria.
Pseudomonas can cause eye infections, staphylococcus
aurous can cause serious skin infections, and
salmonella and e-coli found on the handbags could make
people very sick.

In one sampling, four of five handbags tested positive
for salmonella, and that's not the worst of it.
'There is fecal contamination on the handbags' says Amy.
Leather or vinyl handbags tended to be cleaner than
cloth handbags, and lifestyle seemed to play a role.
People with kids tended to have dirtier handbags than
those without, with one exception.

The handbag of one single woman who frequented
nightclubs had one of the worst contaminations of all.
'Some type of feces, or possibly vomit' says Amy.
So the moral of this story is that your handbag won't
kill you, but it does have the potential to make you
very sick if you keep it on places where you eat.
Use hooks to hang your handbag at home and in toilets,
and don't put it on your desk, a restaurant table, or
on your kitchen countertop.

Experts say you should think of your handbag the same way you would a pair of
shoes. 'If you think about putting a pair of shoes on
your countertops, that's the same thing you're doing
when you put your handbag on the countertops.'
Your handbag has gone where individuals before you
have walked, sat, sneezed, coughed, spat, urinated,
emptied bowels, etc!

Do you really want to bring that home with you?
The microbiologists at Nelson also said cleaning a
handbag will help. Wash cloth handbags and use leather
cleaner to clean the bottom of leather handbags.

  24. I'm not surprised. I have always been appalled like the writer of the article by people dropping their handbags on toilet floors while they use the facilities! i just could not get my hear around it! the worst was when i went to use the toilet in a library and found people dumping the books on the floor while they did their business - i cringed to think of the mumber of times i'd borrowed library books and read them on my bed - i felt like sterilising everything in my life - since then i have had a thing about borroiwng from the lib an prefer to buy my own stuff. back to the handbags though, people tend to look at me as if i'm crazy because i go ga-ga if anyone attempts to put my bag on the floor; i went out once with some friends and i had to ask one of them to hold my bag while i did something - next thing i knew. the bottom of the bag was trailing the floor; immediately i collected the bag, i reached for my antibacterial sanitser inside it and some pocke tissues and wiped all of the bottom thoroughly. for the mere fact that we carry it on our persons and it touches our skin and clothes i would hae thought people would have been more conscious of the hgien aspect but apparently not. needless to say, i don't allow my bag to touch the floor. if seated, i carry it on my lap. when going to the ladies, i ask someome tto hold it for me or if i'm alone, i strap it across me with the main part well away from the facilities and i don't even allow it to touch the sink counte hwen i'm wshing my hands. Thak God! someone finally shed ligh on this matter!

    ReplyDelete
  25. i don't even like other women brushing me with their bags 'cos i don't know where thier bags have been - i can only vouch for mine.

    ReplyDelete
  26. when people visit me and i see their bags going in the toilet with them and/or moving around from floor to chair to table, i follow their trail with anti-bacterial wipes when they leave. also if i know them to be people who are careless about where they put their bags, i still wipe after they are gone even if they put the bag on one spot during their whole visit except it's the floor.

    ReplyDelete
  27. writefreak- lol..u wish!!!!

YNB-yes o...may we not transfer germs on our bags to our children..kai...

Anonymous- hehehe..ur comments racked me up..am guessing you left all three comments ..thanks but pls pls u have to make urself known to me...hehehe..

u are right sha..I am learning o...but this ur neatness is on another level o- following trail with anti-bacterial wipes. hehehe...men i have to get anti bacterial wipes ASAP!

  28. Like the writer said, What one does not know can kill one...so true!

  30. Thanks for sharing... thank God I ain't dead yet(just thinking about places my bag has been)

  31. This is brilliant. Funny enough it applies to men as well. You need to see how some of us drop our bags (laptop bags) and wallets in the most ridiculous of places and yet don't give a hoot abt the germs we might have contacted. Gee, i need to see a doctor rgt away.

The series on my blog has commenced. You might wanna check it out. I'll be glad if u cld spread the word around. Takia

    ReplyDelete
  32. But then ladies are the most affected and God help the next lady who allows her handbag to brush me. We might have to call the cops!

  35. sometimes i remember to wipe the bottom of my handbag with those sterlised, gem killing wipes when i home but most times i forget...

reading this makes me see that i really need to be regimented about doing it all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i really don't understand women that drop their handbags on the toilet floor...abeg why?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would never ever put my handbag on a toilet floor,
I try not to touch anything in a public toilet, infact i try and avoid them like the plague
when i have to use them i use tissue paper to open the door, close it flush the toilet and open the taps.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeeeeeeeeeeeh!
I'm so ashamed of meself right now.
No, i never drop my bag on the toilet floor (I even roll up my jeans wen in a public toilet), but i'm "Yeee-ing" becos i didn't know all this. Wow now i'll begin to see my handbags in a new light. Where do i start now, seeing that i have a lot of 'em? I guess i'll start by reducing the amount i have, and buy more of leather since they are easier to clean with wipes.

Thanks oh for the info oh! It never hurts to know such things. Rather we'll try to be more careful.

    ReplyDelete
  39. it's no surprise handbags r so frigging dirty, they hardly ever et washed!
